Hundreds of residents of Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, were today stunned to see former President Olusegun Obasanjo ride a commercial tricycle, popularly called Keke NAPEP, to pick passengers to their various destinations.

He kicked off the ride from Moshood Abiola way, near the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega station, which is very close to his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), as part of activities to mark his 85th birthday.

Surprised passengers justled to board his tricycle to enjoy the rare privilege, described as a “presidential ride”, as excited residents were seen running after the tricycle, as Obasanjo, dressed in Yoruba native attire, with a fez cap, leisurely cruised on.

He had earlier donated 85 tricycles to young people across the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during an event, tagged “OBJ @85 Free Keke Programme”, organised by the Youth Development Centre of the OOPL.

At the event, he charged youths to rise above the challenges in the country and tap the opportunities, which according to him abound.

“Yes, things are not what they should be, but you, as youths, individually and collectively, must make up your minds, make contributions to make things the way they should be.

“If you leave things to those who are messing it up for you and who are saying you are the leaders of tomorrow, you will never have that tomorrow. Today is your day.

“You must remember God has given you innate ability to be what He wants you to be and if you make up your mind on what you want to be, God will help you and He would provide those people who would help you to reach the sky which should be your limit,” Obasanjo add
Two of the beneficiaries, Bashir Alimodu (Borno) and Asembe Ngumimi (Benue), appreciated the gesture and said it would enhance their businesses.
