Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has said that he is contesting for the Presidency as a Nigerian and not as an Igbo man.

According to the former governor of Anambra state, the election is not about tribe or religion, but based on character, competence, capacity, ability and commitment of who seeks to occupy Aso Rock as president

Obi, who was answering questions during the Editors’ Forum, organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Lagos on Monday, said “next year’s election will not be about tribe. Please, do not vote for Peter Obi because he is from South East or because I am an Igbo man. No.

“I am a Nigerian. I am contesting the election as a Nigerian,” he stated, adding that “It is not going to be my turn, it is the turn of Nigerians to take back their country.”

Obi assured that he is competent to be president, noting however that “it is going to be difficult, for it requires huge mental and physical energy.”

Soliciting the votes of the electorate, he said, “I will be the commander-in-chief. I can drive the process. If it is security, I am going to deal with it headlong. I will be responsible and I won’t take any excuses.

“I want to assure Nigerians that this work, I can do it and it has to be done. I am not going to give excuses. I don’t want to go in and start saying that the man who left yesterday did this, did that.

“You are not hiring the new person to come and start reminding you of your past. If the past was good, you won’t hire him. You hired him to tell you good stories.

“The job of a leader is not to give excuses or complain. The job of a leader is providing solutions and dealing with issues,” Obi said.
