The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has castigated Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his call on President Bola Tinubu to sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike for hosting the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Michael Freeman.

It described Gumi as an ethnoreligious extremist, out to attack people of the South-South extraction, noting that apart from having the right to head the ministry, Wike hails from the Niger Delta region, whose resources were used to build the FCT.

The cleric had in a video, accused Wike of telling the diplomat that he would collaborate with the Israelis on Abuja’s security issues and warned that if Tinubu does not remove him from office, “we will collide with him.”

However, the national spokesperson of the NDC, Mudiaga Ogboru, in a statement on Friday, said the contents of the video are of grave concern to the group.

“We find it incredulous that ethnoreligious extremists like Sheikh Gumi have been allowed by Nigeria’s security agencies to run amok and continue to push extremist views, targeted at people of South-South extraction of Nigeria without caution.

“The recent utterances and subtle threats from these ethnoreligious bigots, aimed at Minister Nyesom Wike since his appointment to head the FCT Ministry must not be brushed under the carpet.

“We would like to state unequivocally that Nyesom Wike, just like every other Nigerian, has the right to head any Ministry, including the FCT, which was built from scratch with resources from the Niger Delta region, where Mr. Wike is from.

“While the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) takes what has now amounted to a threat of life against Nyesom Wike and other southerners seriously, we call on the security agencies to as a matter of urgency rein-in Sheikh Gumi and others like him, who feel they are untouchable and continue to incite violence against Southerners.

“Failure to do so will indeed prove that they are untouchable and will set the tone for how the different constituent parts of Nigeria, most especially the Niger Delta region, will respond to these excesses going forward.”

Gumi, who was delivering a sermon in the video, had said “The Minister of the FCT is a satanic person; I said it before when he was appointed and some people were grumbling.

“He has gone and brought the Israeli Ambassador, that’s what someone sent and I am yet to watch it. But what is confirmed is he said they will collaborate with the Israelis on Abuja’s security issues.

“Abuja will now become an extension of Tel Aviv and when they see anyone with a beard like us, they will say it is Bin Laden and we will be killed.

“If Israelis enter this country, there will be a clandestine operation against any outspoken Islamic cleric; we have seen the signs. Why was Sheikh Jaafar killed? May his soul rest in peace, why did they kill Sheikh Albany? You can see how they are killing; there’s a hit list and we have known this for long.

“For you to understand, they will bring the MOSSAD into our country. Because of this, Tinubu should know that we know their plan, he must choose.

“He should remove the Minister of Abuja; if not, we will collide with him. On the day of a bath, the navel is not hidden,” he said.

The minister, at the meeting with Freeman in his office, had lamented the state of insecurity in the FCT and expressed his readiness to partner with the State of Israel to improve the security situation.

“Yes, we have had one or two setbacks in terms of security threats, but like you know, security issues are everywhere, and we are working very hard to see that we nip in the bud, anything that will give us any negative publicity.

“You know, all over the world, nobody can say you can have one hundred percent security, you know it’s not possible. But we will try as much as we can, anywhere we can collaborate and work together to help us reduce some level of insecurity in the city. But be assured that we are willing to work”.

The diplomat had also said Israel is prepared to establish a digital centre in the nation’s capital, where youths and other interested people can acquire relevant technological skills for the digital economy.
